Winnie Owens-Hart : Twice

Twice 1998–99

I’ve been studying a lot like totally a-LOT on African contemporary art and have come across an artist who goes by the name of Winnie Owens-Hart. I was engaged in an instant attraction towards Twice (1999) a sculpture of a woman’s head most notably the artist herself. Twice visually shouts out ‘sensuality’. It began as a pot then worked on to alter the base into a head. The sculpture depicts the artist’s contemplative voyage, a voyage into her innermost potency; the closing of the sculptures eyes presents a performance of Owens-Hart transatlantic discourse between America and Africa simply by closing her eyes.
