Printmaking & Wet Media Techniques

Visited the “Edinburgh Printmakers” and throughly enjoyed Jessica Harrison’s “Eye of the Beholder” as pictured on the right. It is formed from stone lithograph which is a print made from an image drawn on a limestone slab using a greasy substance. The stone is chemically treated to accept water then inked with a roller and pressed against the paper to create a print.

Above entitled “The Last Supper” and also created from stone lithograph
“The Beheading” is a pencil on paper drawing on the right. Jessica Harrison manipulates and exaggerates human body parts particular the eyes and mouth and alters their appearance in a classical setting which adds a humorous touch.

Chad McCail’s work is very illustrative, “Masked 3″ reminds me of these descriptive airline safety cards you find in the pouch of the seat in front of you
The method McCail used for this piece is screenprinting which uses a woven mesh like canvas to support an ink blocking stencil. A roller or squeegee is moved across the screen pumping ink past the threads of the woven mesh in the open pores.

Above is “Those are the Pearls” a photopolymer gravure based work created by Anne Forte. The technique involves a photopolymer plate which is a metal plate coated with light sensitive film. You have to place the film on the photopolymer plate and expose it under a UV Light. Place the plate in water for 30 secs then carefully wipe the plate with a sponge. When you notice a relief from the the film, the plate is finish. Wash the plate in waster for 15 secs. Place the plate back in the UV Light for 10 mins without the film. The film would then be complete and ready for inking.

Frank Shepard Fairey
Shepard Fairey is a contemporary artist, graphic designer, and illustrator. He is widely known for the poster of Obama Presidential Election. This artwork is accomplished by using oil paints on a primed sheet of metal. Then to preserve the paint, poly or varnish is used to avoid peeling and scratching issues.
A portrait of Mao Zedong created by Andy Warhol in 1972. It’s formed by Silkscreen on Beckett High White paper. Screen-printing which uses a woven mesh like canvas to support an ink blocking stencil.
