Mike Kelley

Mike Kelley(マイク・ケリー) is a complicated artist for his work stretches out in all directions it’s hard to pin him down and shove him in a pigeon-hole. I was introduced to Mike Kelley through the study of Paul McCarthy they share a quality that is highly intangible to grasp although their approach in art is similar.
To break Mike Kelley down for my own sake I will focus primarily on a poster he created for the Patrick Painter Gallery. It is titled The Greatest Tragedy of President Clinton’s Administration what makes this easy for me is that there is text to be read explaining the sex starved population of America due to the bombardment of desirable figures played out by celebrities, how you would have to look a certain way to get “fucked”. The poster promotes Mike Kelley’s installation (he is known for his stuffed toys). The stuffed pillows are laid out to form a body on the floor upon a blanket. This represents the mattress and the pillows are in front of a film poster where the lead actors head has been carefully cut-out and stuck on to substitute the pillows head. The film poster is left with a silhouette of where the head has been cut-out. Kelley places a hole at the end of the pillow to convey sexual craving. Including into the installation is speakers and an audio deck.
I like an artist that opposes political views because there is a relation connecting me and the artists work. What I perceive occurring in society is how Mike Kelley also perceives.

rhyme

The painting above entitled Rhyme was created in 1956 fabricated from paper, oil, enamel, pencil and synthetic polymer paint on canvas. I like this painting for the delicate use of colour schemes that complicates each other. I can tell it is a landscape scenery as the red circle on the yellow surface represents the sun. There’s emphasis placed on the random use of colour below the “sun” from a distance appears like feathers.
